Build Composite Applications That Include Line-of-Business Systems in 15 Minutes

Applications Server - APS

When you build composite applications on the new Windows Server AppFabric and on Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010, you usually need to connect to existing line-of-business (LOB) systems and represent mission-critical workloads that support daily business operations. Leveraging data from and initiating transactions within these systems is a challenging task. You need to identify the functionality you need and the interface to call from a wide array of options. You also need to map to their existing system data exchange format which may represent a complex transformation from the data structure needed by the client of your composite application. This session presents a couple of demos using tools and technologies that will help you to rapidly solve these challenges. These technologies plug seamlessly into the Windows Server AppFabric and SharePoint Server infrastructure to enable developers to focus on composite apps functionality rather than on the plumbing with existing LOB systems.

BDM Session: How Does the Microsoft BI Stack...Stack Up?

Business Intelligence - BIN

You're an experienced Microsoft BI professional and you think Microsoft's is the best BI stack out there. What happens if your employer or client has a large investment in a competing stack and therefore wants to use it instead? Perhaps you’re a CTO or development manager and you need to make a purchasing decision. You know Microsoft BI appears cheaper, but you'd like to understand how it really measures up to its competition. How can you compare Microsoft to its competitors, product by product, if you don't know the competing stacks? In this session, Rian Durandt, long-time Microsoft BI expert, examines the product makeup, capabilities, reputation, and relative pricing of Microsoft's BI competitors, from the big guys, to the niche players, to the open source stacks and cloud BI startups. Learn where Microsoft bests its competition, how its price structure compares, where it may be subject to criticism, and where the stack is headed in future releases. Learn the lineage and acquisition history of multiple vendors' BI stacks and how well those acquisitions and integrations have, or have not, been executed. Finally, learn where the competitive stacks interoperate with Microsoft BI, and in some cases where they require it. At the end of this session, you'll be able to make an informed decision on the selection of Microsoft BI, and be better able to justify that decision to a non-technical audience or to technologists not familiar with Microsoft's BI products.

Dashboard Design Best Practices

Business Intelligence - BIN

How can you design an effective, useful, and appealing dashboard? Many articles and books focus on the mechanics of how to choose KPIs and the various formats available for displaying data. But even the most significant information can be lost if it is not displayed in a memorable way. Is the right format for critical values a grid, a graph, a gauge, maps, diagrams, or something else? What kinds of information are best displayed in a line vs. a bar graph? Where does a scorecard fit into all of this? Since they are not static, how dashboards interact and how they fit into a larger reporting environment offer a particular design challenge. Designing the navigation across the content on each dashboard page is critical to communicating the desired message. Agile Database Development with Visual Studio 2010

Database Platform - DAT

Database developers and DBAs have traditionally been left out of the software development lifecycle. While developers check their code into source control, run tests and builds against their application, the database development lifecycle has typically been side-lined. This is a challenge when deploying a database and trying to troubleshoot problems. This has changed with the Database change management features in Visual Studio. You can take control of your database schema by providing an offline, source-controlled project which is the one true version of the schema. This reduces the risk involved with changing database schema by allowing you to make changes in isolation without affecting other users. Streamline changes to your database using tools that allow you to automatically cascade changes throughout the database schema in a controlled and consistent manner. Learn about features for unit testing, code analysis, refactoring, schema comparison and data generation.

However, user interface design, particularly in the era of advanced UI technologies such as Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and Microsoft Silverlight, requires right brain skills too: visual sense, pattern matching, and empathy with users. The ideal UI designer marries the best of both sides of their mind. In this session we look at the importance of right-brained thinking in UI design, and suggest strategies for left-brain-tending developers to learn to tap into right-brain skills.
